A NOTEWORTHY DIMENSION OF THE BATTLE OF CRETE
A local event becomes more comprehensible only when it is enlisted within the general framework of place and time. In our times, globalization not only abolishes the boundaries and the meaning of a nation state, but it appears to carry along with it and to fight the local traditions and values. While it appeared as a hope of solving all problems, now threatens to demolish everything. The world of social injustices, unjust bombings, narcotics, mental illness and the degrading of the environment create sorrow. We are living in a world full of computers and advanced technological products, but unfortunately without values. The Church has values, which are proposed to society. The Church respects the diversity of human beings, because the greatest beauty is not the relationships of the similar, as much as the harmonization of the different. So opposite to globalization, it proposes ecumenism and universality, which embraces different people, who co-exist, contrary to the worldwide steamroller that assimilates everything into photocopies. The semi-divine "Battle of Crete" in our moment in time takes on a new interpretative and noteworthy dimension and ceases gradually to be considered a significant on the one hand, but of local interest only happening on the other, even though it shocked the then world. The Greek people in Crete, abandoned by their political-military leadership, and with the majority of Cretan men transferred to subjugated Greece, gave a struggle without logic, surmounting human nature, following the way of their soul and their national conscience. They fought a battle by instinct, with leaders only made up of fiery clergy and self-taught folk commanders. New thoughts and questions about the substance of the "Battle of Crete" are put that have a close relationship with the struggle of our Nation in Albania, and the politics and the "traps" of the powerful on our island concerning the geopolitical and financial benefits in the area of the Middle East. It was proven again that Hellenism and Orthodoxy are meanings certainly known throughout broader Greece, with universal dimension; it is humanism and internationalism and indeed the only without imperialistic aims. After the "Battle of Crete" Hellenism is called in our times to give the "Great Struggle" in the area of civilization, within the overflowing of economic and political European Union and globalization. Not enclosed within itself, but maintaining its cultural characteristics and its Greek Orthodox ecumenical conscience, in order to continue to exist and glorify. |
